More important things than numbers

Metrics are powerful.

A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk replies, “this is where the light is.”

Conversion rate, retention, revenue… Optimizing for them makes a difference in your business.

But the problem is that you see them. They pull your attention.

Numbers are always available at hand, and you can always slack into improving them.

And suddenly your whole life is about numbers.

However, there are much more interesting things that you don’t often see, and yet they can make a bigger difference than optimizing for metrics.

People getting joy when experiencing your onboarding. Happy emotions after receiving support from you. Your product working incredibly fast.

And the same for your life. There are much more important things than your bank account numbers.
