A few thoughts on marriage

Dmytro Krasun

In response to Nic Conley’s tweet asking for advice from happily married people:

Nic Conley asks: “I’m getting married in 24 hours. Any advice from happily married people?”

A few thoughts off the top of my head:

  1. Don’t expect your marriage to last forever. Live through it as if every day might be the last day and you chose each other again.

  2. Be extremely open. Try to resolve all your internal conflicts and dissatisfaction. Walking and hiking together, breakfasts and dates help a lot with that.

  3. Marriage is not a competition. There is no status. No winners and losers. It should be 1 + 1 = 3 most of the time, not 2 and definitely not 1.

  4. Many character traits are two sides of one coin. Accept her as-is, and don’t try to change her. Find ways to change yourself if necessary. But be clear about your values and where you can’t compromise at all.

  5. There will be a lot of ups and downs. That is part of what makes a marriage feel alive. What is a heart without a pulse?

Enjoy the journey as a whole.
